Olympian Matthew Abeysinghe dominated swimming winning a further three more gold medals on the ninth day of 13th South Asian Games held in Kathmandu Nepal yesterday to take his tally to seven gold medals.
The SAG will be officially concluded today with a grand closing ceremony.
India becomes the champions of the SAG with 138 gold medals and they only participated in only 17 sports events. Host Nepal secured the runners up berth with 49 golds and Sri Lanka were placed third with 39 medals.
Matthew Abeysinghe won the 50m freestyle, 100m freestyle and recorded a national record in the Individual Medley 200m events grabbing gold medals in all three events. Akalanka Pieris won the bronze in the 100 freestyle and 50m butterfly events.
Sandu Savindi took the bronze medal in the Women`s 50m Butterfly event. The Sri Lankan Men`s Relay team was disqualified from the 4×100 Medley Relay for an early start. The women`s relay team won the silver medal in the 4×100 Medley Relay.
Bangladesh clinched the gold medal defeating Sri Lanka by seven wickets in the men’s T20 cricket final played at Kirtipur yesterday.
The three bronze medals won in boxing were in the Women’s Bantamweight (51-54kg) – Sajeewani. Cooray and Light Flyweight (45-48kg) – Nadeeka Pushpakumari and men’s 64 kg by Dinidu Sapramadu.
Sri Lanka Women`s Basketball team took the silver medal and Sri Lanka’s 3×3 Men`s team won the bronze medal.
Suranga Fernando and Amali Kulatunga took the silver in the 10m Air Pistol.
Maduwanthi Rupasinghe (68KG) won the silver in the women’s category and Lakmal Wijesooriya (74kg) also a silver in the men’s.
Anuradha Karunaratne won a silver in the Individual Compound and Thakshila Damayanthi a bronze also in the Individual Compound.
