Presidential Candidate JVP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake said only the National People’s Power (NPP) is capable of creating a powerful force that could build a corruption free country. Dissanayake made this observation addressing a conference held at Ruhuna University last Saturday (28).
“Following Independence, Sri Lanka’s politics was concentrated around the executive presidency for 41 years. We have had rogues, upasakayas and jokers occupying this seat, and we have had enough experience on how they operate. We still uphold the idea that power to secure democracy should not circulate around one powerful position. Under a government of ours, we shall bring in necessary steps to abolish executive presidency.” Dissanayake said.
Dissanayake also pointed out that strengthening democracy is the only way out of a separated country. Speaking on provincial councils, Dissanayake said that the provincial councils have now turned into training center for top rank politicians’ sons and daughters. He pointed out that many ministers or senior politicians have their sons, daughters, wives or husbands in Provincial Council members. This provincial council concept should be turned into a people-oriented institution that is benefitting to the general public, Dissanayake said.
Dissanayake also stressed the importance of using resources in the country for industrial purposes without exporting them in the form of raw material. He also pointed out that education system in the country should undergo drastic changes as well.
