The Election Commission is prepared to hold the General Election once the spread of Covid 19 in the country has been contained, said Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya.
Deshapriya said a decision on holding the General Election will be taken after the Supreme Court determination over the petitions filed against holding the General Election.
He said that Commission officials are expected to have its final meeting this week to discuss the holding of the election in compliance with health guidelines including social distancing, hand washing and wearing facemasks.
“Several rounds of discussions were held over the holding of the General Election and a number of decisions were also taken,” he said.
Deshapriya said that he sought the opinions of officials over the holding of an election in compliance with health guidelines issued by the health authorities to arrest the spread of Covid-19.
The Election Commission Chairman also said that he will meet the representatives of political parties in the election fray to solicit their views.
Deshapriya also said a roadmap for holding the forthcoming election under the present situation will be prepared based on the decisions arrived at these meetings and it will be submitted to the Commission for approval.
