When the Olympic Games come to Asia, most countries in the continent make high medal hopes. Filipino hopes are high that the Tokyo Olympics will break new ground for Pinoy athletes.
Top of the list of potential podium-toppers include golfer Yuka Saso, gymnast Carlos Yulo, weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz, skateboarder Margielyn Didal, pole vault E. J. Obiena and boxers Eumir Marcial and Nesthy Petecio.
Swimmer Teofilo Yldefonso won the Philippines’ first ever medal at the Olympic Games – a Bronze in the Men’s 200m backstroke at the 1928 Olympics in Amsterdam.
Since 1928, the Philippines have won 10 Olympic Medals – three Silver Medals and seven Bronze Medals but are missing that elusive Gold Medal pending.
Hidilyn Diaz, no stranger to ripping up the history books with a Silver Medal in Rio 2016, now looks forward to becoming the first Woman from the Philippines to win an Olympic Gold.
