The Government should seek the assistance of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) at this crucial moment when the country’s economy is suffering an economic downturn with prices of essential commodities on the increase, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadsasa said.
He said though the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) is the main Opposition in Parliament, we have no intention of creating problems and only wish to help the Government overcome all obstacles with the people’s interests at heart.
The Opposition Leader further said people never forget the days the Government promised that the prices of essential items would be given at consolation prices.
“But what has happened to these promises, nobody can see the reality of such statements,” he said.
SJB MP Dr. Harsha de Silva said when other countries show vast development, our country is going again into an era where people will have to stand in queues to purchase essential items.
He said queues cannot be stopped by imposing laws, appointing an Essential Service Commissioner or by deploying the Armed Forces to control the people”.
Dr. de Silva alleged that the Government borrowed one billion US dollars from various countries to spend on COVID-19 activities and now says that there are no funds to purchase vaccines.
He also warned the Government that if this situation continues, there will be a scarcity of petrol, diesel and kerosene in the country.
